I've been wanting them to tear down that shack they pass off as a train station for years. I'm so happy to hear it's getting redeveloped. It's embarrassing. Apparently, it was originally built as some kind of storage facility or polebarn for MSU, and you can tell.

I also heard on Channel 6 when they reported on this, last night, that they were redeveloping the land around it to include housing or something, but wasn't listening very closely. It could be I heard two different stories melding in to one another. lol

Developer proposes 8-story complex at Grove St., Albert Ave.

David Krause and Doug Cron are proposing an 8-story mixed-use complex at the corner of Grove St. and Albert Ave. in downtown East Lansing. The corner is currently occupied by two properties that Krause owns. The two developers previously built the Stonehouse Village and Albert Place Condominiums developments. They are looking to house the cities Restaurant Incubator, an offshoot of the cities Technology Innovation Center (TIC).

The quickest timetable would put construction starting in May 2011.

David Krause, the developer of the proposed building that would be adjacent to the Grove Street Parking Garage, said the bottom floor of the building would be zoned for commercial use and could house the city’s proposed restaurant incubator. The upper seven floors would be primarily two-bedroom, 1,100-square-foot apartments with one and a half bathrooms and will be available on a rental basis.

Wasn't this where a 10-story building being proposed for this area a few years back?

@MichMatters: This is on the other corner of the intersection from that development. That development was on the parking lot, whereas this is planned for the site of a house and small 2-floor apartment building.

I'm glad to hear of more potential construction in downtown EL. It will be nice to have two sizable downtowns in the area. The article didn't really say, but I'm assuming this will be student housing?

That's the feeling that I got. I don't think the condos sold that well for Albert Place, and that the remaining ones have been switched to apartments.

@hood: From what I can find, this development will be located at 5155 Marsh Rd in Meridian Township. It will have 27,000 square feet of commercial space, 36 multiple-family dwelling units, and a daycare. It's been in the planning phases since 2008, and Google Streetview shows construction equipment already on site.

I'll have to check it out next time I'm by there. I wonder if they've really started construction already? I'm not a big fan of suburban development, but I like it a lot more when it's developments like this one.

The two houses on Louis Street are ready for demolition now. The utility meters have been removed and the houses look to be stripped of anything of value.

It's been a while since the project was talked about. To recap, it's a 4-story (44 feet tall) building with 12 units of 4 bedrooms each unit, with two floors of underground parking.

Any idea as to the design of the building? Will it be anything special, or just basic student housing?

This is the design of the building that will be replacing these two houses. I couldn't find any better renderings. The building looks sideways, as they had to do that to compensate for the setbacks.

There's mention in this weeks City Council agenda for two site plans of projects that are coming for downtown East Lansing.

An application from Infinity Companies LLC for Site Plan and Special Use Permit approval to construct a four story mixed use building at 213-217 Ann Street. This building would replace the building that currently houses the Post Bar, Kirabo, and Mackeral Sky (a one-story building). (This is the first time I have heard about this project, I'd like to see some renderings.)

An application from A&G Partnership, LLC for Site Plan and Special Use Permit approval to construct an eight-story mixed use building at the northeast corner of Albert Avenue and Grove Street. These two buildings across from 7-11 house student apartments.

I really hope both of these projects happen. I'd love to see East Lansing gain some more height in its downtown. With these two projects, City Center II, West Village and East Village, downtown EL is shaping up to be quite a nice place over the next several years. Were there any other projects that you know of proposed for downtown EL?

There is a new tavern/bar that is looking to move across from the Marriot on MAC. It's called "What up Dawg" and they are trying to get a liquor license now.

Edit: The liquor license was approved.

Last night the City Council met and discussed several topics:
    * Both downtown developments on Ann Street were approved
    * The West Village project got a brownfield amendment that now makes the probability of success much higher for a hotel to move in. I should note too that the size of the hotel has dramatically increased from 24,000 square feet to 85,000 square feet and now also includes 1 floor of underground parking.
    * The Culvers restaurant on Lake Lansing Rd (in an outlot of Meijers) was denied

The Culver denial baffles me, as do the concerns about the proposal for the BC/BS property at the southwest corner of that area. I don't know if the residents to the south ever got the memo, but even before the annexation of the Nothern Tier this was developed to be a high-traffic area.

BTW, didn't the LSJ report yesterday that another request the developers was asking for was to remove the groundfloor retail element from West Village hotel?
