This is the design of the building that will be replacing these two houses. I couldn't find any better renderings. The building looks sideways, as they had to do that to compensate for the setbacks.
There's mention in this weeks City Council agenda for two site plans of projects that are coming for downtown East Lansing.
An application from Infinity Companies LLC for Site Plan and Special Use Permit approval to construct a four story mixed use building at 213-217 Ann Street. This building would replace the building that currently houses the Post Bar, Kirabo, and Mackeral Sky (a one-story building). (This is the first time I have heard about this project, I'd like to see some renderings.)
An application from A&G Partnership, LLC for Site Plan and Special Use Permit approval to construct an eight-story mixed use building at the northeast corner of Albert Avenue and Grove Street. These two buildings across from 7-11 house student apartments.
I really hope both of these projects happen. I'd love to see East Lansing gain some more height in its downtown. With these two projects, City Center II, West Village and East Village, downtown EL is shaping up to be quite a nice place over the next several years. Were there any other projects that you know of proposed for downtown EL?
Last night the City Council met and discussed several topics:
* Both downtown developments on Ann Street were approved
* The West Village project got a brownfield amendment that now makes the probability of success much higher for a hotel to move in. I should note too that the size of the hotel has dramatically increased from 24,000 square feet to 85,000 square feet and now also includes 1 floor of underground parking.
* The Culvers restaurant on Lake Lansing Rd (in an outlot of Meijers) was denied
The Culver denial baffles me, as do the concerns about the proposal for the BC/BS property at the southwest corner of that area. I don't know if the residents to the south ever got the memo, but even before the annexation of the Nothern Tier this was developed to be a high-traffic area.
BTW, didn't the LSJ report yesterday that another request the developers was asking for was to remove the groundfloor retail element from West Village hotel?
According to the council member concerns last night, that corner where the Culvers was to be located was designed as a buffer between the business and residential. I don't think that those people are against business, but I do think that they recognize the addition of another fast-food restaurant will only take business away from other restaurants nearby and have no net-gain.
I'd like to see that part of the parking lot returned to green space as a community park. Meijer never needed that much parking and it just creates more runoff to the drains, not to mention all the unnecessary snow plowing.
