  • If they don't tear down the building, you better believe that space won't be empty for long. As for the the coffee shop, it could just be that the owners didn't even offer the business for sale. Like you said, I can't imagine there wouldn't have been any offers to continue it. It's kind of why I wonder if the owner doesn't plan to redevelop the site, or at least have another business already lined up, because that's the only way to really explain the business not continuing.
  • The article says that the owners have found a buyer, but haven't shared details of the sale:
Thomas said the Sawvels have found a buyer for the building, but she did not know details including whether the space would remain a coffee shop.
Note that the very large residential projects of Louis St. are right behind the coffee shop. It would be a good location to build here and place a coffee shop and book store on the ground floor, although I don't know if Curious could handle the loss of sales during construction.
  • The East Lansing City Council approved the site plan for the 6-story building at Spartan and Grand River (the ice cream shop). Apparently, the building is 6 floors at the corner and then steps down to the north, I guess to keep it from looming over the homes to the north. It'll also have a floor or underground parking in addition to parking (and retail space) on the first floor. They also approved a site plan for a non-descript one-story credit union up on Lake Lansing.

They put off, however, any approvals for the five-story project at Bailey and Grand River at the site of the old Taco Bell. I hear the Stonehouse folks asked for them to delay actions while they are trying to figure out their brownfield request.
  • Some positive news if your local politicians who aren't anti-development. Looks like former mayor Mark Meadows is running to get back on council. Current mayor Nathan Triplett is the only other incumbent running, and he's a pretty even-keeled, thoughtful, deliberative guy. Altogether, seven candidates will be running for the three at-large seats, current councilmembers Gooderis and Boyle will not seek re-election. Too bad Ruth Baier's seat isn't up this cycle.
  • Guess we know the building where Grand River Coffee is going isn't going to be redeveloped: Two new Tabooli restaurants in Lansing, East Lansing:
EAST LANSING – Tabbouleh — a vegetarian salad made with tomatoes, parsley, grains and spices — is a healthy and popular dish.

Tabooli is a local restaurant chain in the making.

Brothers Fathy and Mohammed Shetiah opened the first Tabooli in September of last year in a former KFC building on Michigan Avenue in Lansing.

By the end of October, they plan to open a second location in the space once occupied by Grand River Coffee in East Lansing and a third in Delta Township.

BTW, the third location is technically at the Lansing and Delta township borders at Waverly and St. Joseph.
  • Really! My wife will love that, close to our East Lansing home.
  • Not sure exactly where this is in relation to the other places in the area, but Falcon Point Investors is looking to convert an existing manufactured housing community north of Falcon Point Golf Course's Hawknest subdivision into 120 condominium units. This is west of intersection of Chandler and State Roads. Not sure if they mean reusing the existing units, or a tear-down and rebuild. Anyway, East Lansing set a public hearing for September 1. Anyone have any additional information on this?

In other development news, some shell organization is asking to for a rezoning of 3126 West Road from "Residential Agriculture" (I'd never even heard of that classification) "to Community Retail Sales Business." This looks to be a plot of land up West Road at Abbey within the large block which includes Krogers and lots of office space. Anyway, the plot of land has three single family homes and are the last residential properities left in this large block. I wonder what exactly the plans for this land is? Most likely some non-descript medical offices or something.

This is the manufactured housing community that they are talking about, http://screencast.com/t/61KLQ01A1. After the roads were built and a few of the lots sold, the company filed for bankruptcy and it remains mostly a ghost town that could make a pretty cool go-kart track ;) I think there was a proposal about 5 years ago to put condos there but it never went anywhere as the economy hadn't fully recovered by that point.

For the Residential Agriculture to Community Retail Sales Business, that sounds to me like the developer wants to put in some small retail, probably things that cater to the office workers nearby. I could see a small convenience store, maybe lunch restaurant and a hair salon/barber shop.
  • I was wondering if maybe the aerials were out of date, but you explained for me why it looks so empty: because it is. lol Good to hear, I guess, that this is getting a redo. Seems an odd place to locate modular homes even back then. Years and years ago it might have made since there were already some in the area, but funny the developer didn't see that this area was going in another direction.
  • Talking about aerials, the Google satellite images were updated within the past month or two, if you use the classic desktop version or the mobile version of maps you can check it out.
