  • I saw there are steel beams going up at the City Hall, and the apartment building in the next block has walls going up to the top floor. Just dirt at the Ovation corner. I would like to see the city get the owners of the burned-out liquor store across the street do something with their property it has been boarded up for well over a year with no sign of any renovation.
  • I noticed the new housing going up on Pennsylvania Ave yesterday. I remember it was noted here but I was thinking it was further down to the south, it was great to see something new being built in that area. When U of M actually builds all that has been planned there will be a lot of people who will want to live near the hospital.
  • Over on the north side, I saw construction equipment and crews at Otto JR High School. I remember reading about a project there on this page, but I can't remember what was going to be built there. The fish ladder project is looking very nice; they were working on an outdoor fireplace behind the amphitheater. I hope that it will actually have a fire, the one in downtown EL has been out for two years. Do they ever light the fireplace on the riverwalk downtown Lansing. I have never seen it working.

Otto is slowly becoming a sort of community center, it's been a couple years since I'd heard any updates but construction equipment could be a good sign.

Regarding the Rotary Park fireplace, I don't know, maybe in the cooler weather they'll start it up again? As I mentioned before, there's been a lot fewer people since the big shootout there. I that, coupled with the city's unwillingness to deal with the homeless effectively has deterred people. Fish Ladder Music Park is getting a fireplace though. Hopefully this stuff doesn't end up being immediately neglected post-installation only to sit there broken for many years and eventually be removed having spent it's life mostly as an eyesore, as goes the story with some park infrastructure.

EDIT: There's talk, coming from REO Town folks, that REO Town has received some significant grant for placemaking, to the tune of over $10 million (possibly $14m?). Apparently something of Slotkin's doing, I'm curious as to whether it's truly set in stone or why we haven't heard anything yet. If true, it's a pretty big deal for that area.
