Lansing was on the cusp of a boom at the worst time possible. A bunch of seemingly promising projects were proposed in 2007/2008, right before the worst real estate and financial market crash in a long time. I'm pretty confident that if those projec…

This is something that I've wondered as of late. Are investors/banks really that bearish on the downtown Lansing housing market or is something else going on? I do think the banks are a significant part of the lack of developments and the low qualit…

The principle behind unions is solid, but the reality is that many are corrupt and some are even still tied to organized crime. Hiring random people to act as protesters would be unsurprising.

I came across a well done Youtube video describing the history of the Capitol Building: This is Lansing - Michigan State Capitol Tour I make note of it mostly because there are some interesting renderings of proposed Capitol replacements at 3:30.

I don't have anything inherently against public land being sold or leased for private projects, it depends on all the various circumstances of a particular deal. I also agree with the sentiment that selling parkland is generally a bad idea, but ther…

I've been driving around in East Lansing a lot over the past two years and I've really grown to dislike all the four lane roads. Lansing did well when they switched most of their four lane roads to three lane ones, I hope that trend continues in EL.

Apparently the city and new property owner came to an agreement at their March 17th hearing: East Lansing's Evergreen Apartments to be torn down It's good that the city is tearing down the building they own on Abbott and I'm happy to see the new …

I also think it's scaled right for that area. It'd be nice if it were closer to Grand River, but I don't have any major complaints about this building nor am I a fan of it, it just is.

The Rocks were already complete at the time that comment was made. The Cottages are supposed to be on the east side of Abbott just north of Lake Lansing on that site being cleared of trees (I noticed the trees being cleared around a month ago). I…

It says the boat club land in question is west of Waverly and across the river from Woldemar. On the satellite photos I see a driveway leading from the end of Hunters Ridge to a small greenish building near the river. If I had to guess, this is the …

One of the projects applying for the PILOT program, the "Walnut Park Apartments," is back in this weeks council agenda. It is the new apartment building that's part of The Abigail project (The Abigail's PILOT is also up for approval). This makes me …

Gillespie owns the Sears building and I assume his intentions are to redevelop the site, so it'd seem any renovation of the building would be unlikely. I'd also assume whoever owns the Staples building would be thinking more about building something…

While I'm not the most enthusiastic person when it comes to social events, if you can get at least a few people on board I'll show up as long as the date/time works for me.

I think all of these towers are at 7 or 8 floors. @Michmatters I think the architect is Niles Bolton.

That's sorta the same attitude I've had all along regarding these colorful buildings. I'm not a great fan of the designs or the colors, but I'd like the buildings a lot more if they simply used better materials. That dark blue paneling on the Out…

Maybe some progress on the horizon?: Some abandoned buildings in E.L. Park District to be torn down this spring, others to have fate decided in court - State News The article says the city will tear down the building it owns at Abbot and Albert,…

Yeah, from what I can gather the wood essentially takes the place of steel beams, concrete is still used for the building cores, foundation and sometimes the floors. I'm sure in taller CLT buildings concrete and steel may play a larger structural ro…

Public perception on the fire risks is sure to be a major limiting factor, but these buildings have fire suppression and concrete cores, I've read claims that with this cross laminated timber the charring on the outside can prevent the rest from bur…

Yeah, it was always my thinking that concrete is preferred in residential buildings, but sometimes they do use steel for whatever reasons. The price of steel and all metals went up quite a bit from around 2000 until ~2010, prices are way off thei…

I drive by there quite a bit and have also been eyeing those elevator towers as they rise. I'm a little surprised it looks like they wont be using a tower crane here, given the size of the floor plates I would've almost expected them to. I'm also wo…
