Well gbd, 10 or 20 years ago I'd have agreed fully with you on GM. But now that they are making electric cars and the environmental movement has gained widespread acceptance, perhaps GM could improve its image (and sales...) by making a commitment t…

Definitely wishful thinking (and a lack of patience for moving this project forward...) on my part. I was also encouraged by this tidbit at the bottom of an ELi article about the Center City project: http://eastlansinginfo.org/content/center-cit…

All good ideas, and of course the Olds Museum would feature heavily in such a plan. If the museum can't move, perhaps there could be a "Transportation Trail" between the GR plant and the Olds Museum/Museum District? It could incorporate a new park…

I drove by the site this morning and noticed that it looks like they are swapping out the fencing that is currently up for taller fence further in from the road. Perhaps this is a positive sign of things to come?

Magnate and gbd, re REO town: Since moving here a few years ago, I have felt the same way about the lack of facilities and attractions to highlight GM and Lansing's manufacturing heritage. Considering how successful such things have been elsewhe…

Very good news, and a great step forward in redeveloping what is probably one of the ugliest major intersections on Grand River in East Lansing.

Magnate - having watched the big bank building come down over the course of several days, I'm not sure there was much of the facade left. gbd - I think you're on track with the idea target store being a retail anchor for the downtown.

I'd be up for that. I avoid driving down Harrison specifically for that reason.

Thanks sabatoa , I must have missed that news item

Does anyone know what is going on with the renovations at the old Beer Grotto? There is some plastic sheeting covering a big hole on the Cedar Street side of the building. I was guessing that maybe the bank office was expanding, but I really don't…

Yes, street lights ~ traffic lights... I should have been more precise.

Thanks! I hope my comment didn't come off as too negative towards the improvements MSU has made to this buildings at this intersection - I think they look much better than what was there previously. I'm just surprised they didn't follow through to…

I drove by this campus over the weekend, and it looks like work is well underway. It will be much nicer once the older, remaining buildings are rehab'd - there's still a lot of plywood up on the old window openings.

On another note, I can't believe that the university hasn't done something more to spiff up the intersection at k-zoo and harrison road. After dumping 100's of millions of dollars into the Breslin Center and 1855, the rusty old electrical posts fo…

It will look good, but I'm still having a hard time figuring out how the university is going to functionally connect that part of campus to the main portion. It's so isolated and has still has such a specific mission (clinical and biomed-based rese…

This is pie-in-the-sky, but it would be great if the city could forgive the back-taxes by carving off a chunk of that huge parking lot to set up as a small park/outdoor marketplace. That would really give that huge, sprawling commercial intersectio…

Eli has a great article on the fallout from the failure of the EL income tax on city council's future plans: http://eastlansinginfo.org/content/council-discusses-major-budget-cuts-following-income-tax-failure Some highlights... Erik Altman …

Well, there also is the history of Lansing, and Michigan, really, as being culturally car centered due to the regional economy.

Ditto. I couldn't even find the mayoral (s)election results on the EL city website.

Temporary parking is a possibility I hadn't considered; I'd have to go back and see whether they topped the lots with gravel or dirt fill. But it seems like they have deliberately marked out the seeded areas, so I'm thinking they probably won't be …
