"The design is final"...this is so discouraging. I don't see where the $40 million is going. This design is suburban shit. I wasn't so upset when I believed this couldn't be a final design...
I skimmed the article earlier, but the mayor's disinterest in the design comes through very strongly, and always has. His entire framing of a "city hall" is where "customers" come to do "one-stop" shopping, instead of a city hall being a place where the community gathers to effect its values and aspirations. So, it's no wonder that this looks like some glorified medical office building out in Haslett. Thing is so short, it'll look like a sibling between Grand Vista Place and Riverview 220. No sway, no nothing. I'm almost out of words. lol
I will literally be voting for anyone who challenges him, though, it's unlikely he'll lose. I just can not countenance his embarrassing lack of vision for anything. If he just wants to be an administrator, then he should have went into city management somewhere. And that's exactly what he is; he's not a mayor, he's a city manager. /rant
Yeah. I'm with you. I'm done with him at this point.
This looks like suburban office parks I've worked on (not proud of them lol). A Comcast call center comes to mind. You're absolutely right. He sees it as a service center, not a community hub that we can be proud of. This isn't appropriate for a city of our size and history.
Schor almost sounds petty in the article. They didn't like his design, so screw it let's approve the first thing that they show me that comes in on budget.
Agreed, Schor has gotta go. If we get someone incompetent in his place then at least the political space is open for someone else to rise up, whereas nobody serious seems to want to go against Schor. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll leave on his own accord. He seems like the fail-up type.
There is nowhere for him to "fail up" to. He's already had damn-near every job in the region, already, short of state senator. And that seat's not opening up anytime soon. He might leave for the private sector, but it'd have to be for a very cushy job. He will be around for a very long time short of someone challenging him.
He was a "love him or hate him"-type of guy, but I didn't really mind Virg, tbh. I sometimes had disagreements with his style and sometimes his policies, and sometimes major disagreements. But what I appreciated about him is that you never had to guess where he stood, or question his commitment to viewing things big-picture. I don't think politics - particularly left-of-center in this region - allows for personalities like that, anymore. I hope I'm wrong, because we need clarity and honesty in leaders more than ever.
I fear we're probably getting a bit off topic, though, since there is an actual "Regional Politics" thread. lol So...my bad. lol
