Hurray! They must have heard our cries. lol Still, every platform at a major station in Michigan should be a high (level-boarding for train), concrete platform. But simply repaving this embarrassing one is a start.
BTW, do you just park in the current lot to visit the site?
I was by the station yesterday, it still seems that it is not in use as of yet. Is the property issue with the railroad still causing the delay? It does seem like they are starting to take care of the landscaping as the weeds are gone.
Did not take a picture, but arriving via Amtrak last night I happened to de-board at the location of the new station, and it makes for a MUCH better impression upon arrivers than the old station. It still was not in use for train passengers, however. But it was decorated for Christmas, for bus passengers I presume.
Amtrak signed a lease for the new space two weeks ago, but they are still a few weeks out from moving in as they need to coordinate their move and make sure it is all timed right (phones hooked up with no outages in between, etc). Once Amtrak moves, the old station can be demolished and the final parking lot can be paved.
Amtrak will move in to the station next week on Monday. The last train to leave the old Amtrak station will be the 8:45am Blue Water line to Chicago, and the first train to leave the new station will be the 8:54pm Blue Water line to Port Huron.
