I'm with on that gbinlansing. The Michigan Avenue signage along the trail is really looking really wore out. Maybe it will be updated when (if) they put the stairs back.
At the risk of turning this into a river trail discussion, I would love if they updated the lighting, after Shiawasee heading north just to Old Town, to the same lights that are along the trail by the City Market. They are much brighter and I'm sure much more efficient (though I'm sure much more expensive). I never feel comfortable going too much farther north than Shiawasee while walking the dog after it gets dark as the lights there are a little on the dim side, their too far apart, and some of them aren't even functioning making it even worse.
Circling back to art, everytime I walk past the Cooley Law School building on Capitol Ave, I always envision a huge mural covering the entire blank wall on its south side, though a building next to it could work too
This is a small thing, but the burned-out former medical office on the west side of Aurelius about halfway between Forest and Cavanaugh has been torn down. It happened sometime in the last couple days. Not sure if they are doing anything with that piece of property, but it's nice to have that gone.
I have said something similar about lighting along the trail especially downtown and under the bridges. It's kind of creepy walking under the wide bridges even when there is no one down there, really creepy if there is. Of course nothing has ever happened other than being asked for a hand out, but I am a pretty big guy,I'm not sure I would want to be a woman alone walking. So make those places bright and even interesting, Under Mich. Ave the light could hi-light the old stone foundation buttresses that are really nice stone. I am going to join the Friends of the River trail and bring up these suggestions.
I never saw the mural on the side of the old Masonic Temple [Cooley Law School] it looked really great. They are trying to sell the building so that could be the reason the mural is no longer there. There is a nice new mural on the side of the Jerusalem Bakery on Michigan Ave. It is great to see all the new street art around town.
I was wondering how long did it take before they removed the burned out building. The printing shop on Malcolm X burned over a year ago and is still a big pile of junk.
Do you mean that it was burned out when you moved to the south side in '03? Wow that would be a long time. I hope they move sooner on the print shop.
It is always strange to drive by the empty expanse on the west side, with 1,000 jobs it would seem to be a big operation. I wonder what could fill all those sites?
Hopefully soon I will be able to buy a house here, and I think the west side is really nice and I have been looking there. It will be great if they tamed Saginaw/Oakland streets. The speed limit could be lower. When they build what ever it is that will bring in 1,000 jobs it could be a chance to revitalize the commercial strips a long both streets. Just past MLK to the east is a former neighborhood shopping district that reminds me of REO town with the old store fronts and big houses. There were a lot of businesses to the west as well I can remember going there often back in the 60's.
Another REOtown update, over at GM they put up a new billboard. It's mainly white and has a big man's face in it. I am again having a hard time understanding why this is what GM has come up with as a good use for these iconic and historic buildings. It does not look bad as a billboard goes but on the front of the building it's almost all white except for the Cadillac symbols, which makes the marble look yellow and dirtier. One might think "are they going to paint?" I wish they could find a more dignified use for these buildings.
