Both McLaren and Sparrow rent space in a large medical center building on Saginaw behind the Taco Bell. I'm curious what the building owner will do now that they are losing the two major tenants.
I don't think it'll be an issue either, as @MichMatters said the westside is seeing a lot of growth. The lack of an emergency room or ambulatory care center on the west side was already a bit of problem before McLaren moved, with them on Collins the distance between Grand Ledge residents and trauma care was getting ridiculous. These are very necessary facilities.
I'd be less angry if it weren't for people having silly/disingenuous stances like "there's no labor force to support it", "it's taking away farm land" or "use existing industrial buildings". These people are idiots. I have a feeling the $50+ billion Western Digital facility that looks likely for the Flint area would have very likely been coming here if it weren't for this fiasco. We may have missed our opportunity to land something as significant as a major microchip manufacturing plant.
Looks like Windsor Township approved the final site plan for Consumers Energy's new service center at Billwood and Canal. It will be nearly 94,000 sq ft, about 22,000 sq ft of which will intitially be unbuilt but added as needed. The facility on Willow is 78,500 sq ft.
The township doesn't post agenda packets or anything, so there is nothing to show what it looks like or who the architect/general contractor is. But this does mean that construction is imminent, which sets in motion planning for the demolition of the Willow Street facility. A reminder that that site will be a brownfield, which will need environmental remediation. As was discussed when this was announced, the city only nailed down Consumers a commitment to clean up the site for industrial standards. Anything beyond that would have to be the a new owner's responsibility.
Also, this a reminder that this was all part of a PA 425 Agreement in which the the parcel in Windsor Township is temporarily transferred to the city so that the city still gets to collect and keep all income taxes - individual and corporate - and all property taxes, but will pay the township their millage-rates worth of them. This is one of the better 425 agreements they negotiated, mostly because they will be extending a water main down to the property via the BWL. That was not the case with others like College Fields, GM Delta Township, etc.
