  • The work on Campbell Hall is nearly done on the outside, the new windows look great, and they just finished installing copper finish around the chimney tops, everything architecturally correct, the same goes for the museum. I find the most interesting feature of that building is the north facing wall with all the sunken arched window wells. That wall looks different than the other three.
Over on Harrison the Wellness Center is an impressive looking building. The front glass facade is nearly all installed and it looks very cool, and I noticed there what looks like a section inflated roof. It seems that MSU is building another similar complex next door, I noticed there is an arena going up in the Wellness Center, so I guess they will have a lot of arena seat capacity for many events at the same time.
  • The new scoreboard project is progressing; this week crews installed the south facing board on the north endzone [facing the Red Cedar]. The Spartan icon is being replaced with what looks like an LED type screen, which I find disappointing as those signs were the backdrop for many Spartan fans and graduation photos. While I could be wrong about what type of board it is I fear it is going to be like the newer electronic billboard signs that are now all over town. IMO this will change the views from the Beal Garden and the Red Cedar River Trail with bright illuminated messages shining through the trees as you look towards the south. I know I am one of those old people you hear about on the internet, but do people really have to be looking at illuminated screens all of the time everywhere they go? I would hope they only turn it on, on game days but I don't think that will be the case. I wish they would ask me about these things!
  • I could be wrong! but the surface of the NORTH facing outer wall of the north endzone scoreboard as it is now, is covered with black rectangle panels that look like they may be LED screens. They would be the same locations on the north endzone but with both sides LED screens. I guess it could be the back of the south facing board, it does just not really seem like the materials they would use if it was just the back of a scoreboard. I will let you all know if I can watch the game on those boards from my building. I would rather have the Spartan icon back up there.
  • I haven't seen it yet but I wouldn't be all that surprised if they put video boards facing out from the stadium.
  • Oh, good I really did not want to see an illuminated sign facing the river. I will be looking for the work to continue and I'll let you know how it is going.
  • The construction fences have been removed from Campbell Hall and the building looks like it is brand new. It should be ready for students to move in when they return in late August. They have also installed large green and white place name signs at the Union and several other buildings; they are rather large but look good. And they have removed the graffiti from under the new Farm Lane Bridge and have also finished the landscaping which looks very nice! It takes so little to make me happy! The other big building projects are moving along at a fast pace. The scoreboards still have the black panels on the back; it may be that they are going to broadcast the Spartan symbol on the screen as depicted in the drawings. Anyway, it still looks like LED screen to me.
  • Today while out on our building's outdoor deck which overlooks the campus, I saw that they were testing the new scoreboard on the south side of the stadium. The board looks much brighter, and sharper at least in the test patterns, and maybe even a bit larger in dimensions on the 4 sides. The framing on the north endzone boards is being installed and so far, it looks like the back of the scoreboard facing north are just the black panels I saw before hopefully without led screens. They have also installed the ring of LED boards along the top of north and south walls.
I also finally figured out what the tower on the grounds of the Union is, it is a river flood waring siren as I saw some illustrated in the coverage of the Texas floods. I also now remember seeing a similar tower downtown on the river trail. It is reassuring to know the areas rivers are monitored and have alert sirens, as we saw in Midland County in 2020 this kind of flood can happen in Michigan.
  • MSU Pavilion has been renamed the Farm Bureau Pavilion, the sponsorship will help fund the new arena they had been fundraising for along with other improvements. There's no word on the timeline for the addition or improvements. The old expansion proposal was for a 40k sq ft indoor/outdoor arena, the new articles specifically state "indoor arena". Apparently MSU announced this back in December but local media is just running a story on it now.

I'm glad to see a venue like MSU Pavilion be successful in the area but I do hope that the state money for the Lansing Center come's through and the city chooses to do an expansion so we can get a few of these Pavilion events back downtown.

  • This week I noticed that MSU began demolishing the warehouse-like buildings on the east side of Spartan Stadium. I wonder if this area will be converted to parking or is a new building planned.
The scoreboard project is nearly done, the south endzone board "looks larger" and is very bright, and they have installed the Spartan icon on the top.
  • All signs seem to point to MSU announcing something major with the football stadium in the relatively near future, this building's demolition is a part of that. I'm betting that whenever they build the second tower on that side of stadium they will make the area between there and the street a nicely landscaped plaza/park.
